The Neuroscience of Films

One advertisement that sticks out to me is the "Happy Nappers" commercial from when I was a child. If you are unaware of what a Happy Napper is, it is a sleeping bag with an animal as the pillow. The sleeping bag can be rolled up into the pillow. When you roll up the sleeping bag, it is transformed into a stuffed animal that you can play with. This was so enticing to me because my family often went camping when I was little. I thought it would be cool to have a sleeping bag that I could sleep in, but also roll up and play with. I wanted a Happy Napper so badly when I was little. I would beg my mom to get me one every single time the commercial came on. It took around a whole year of begging before my mom finally caved and bought me one for Christmas.  The Happy Napper commercial used to come on during the breaks between the television shows that I would watch. I still remember this commercial to this day. The commercial showed children taking naps in the Happy Nappers and the...

Locomotion and Assistive Devices

The Importance of Fitting the Client It is very important to appropriately fit a client for the use of an assistive device. If the device is improperly fitted, it drastically increases the risk for fall and injury. The assistive device is supposed to help the client, not harm them. Having the device fitted properly ensures client safety and reduces the risk of injury. Having the device incorrectly fitted can lead to balance issues which is the reason as to why the risk for fall increases. Properly fitting a client for an assistive device is also important because if the device is incorrectly fitted, it can cause poor posture. Poor posture causes issues with balance. Having difficulties with balance, as stated before, increases the risk for fall and injury which is what we, as therapists, want to avoid. Having good posture allows for muscles to be able to function to the best of their ability. This is important because many of the assistive devices require certain muscles to function pr...

Transfers!

It is very important to understand how to perform transfers properly when working with clients. The main concern when transferring a client is safety. In order to preform a safe transfer, it is essential that you, as the therapist, know the clients capabilities. As a the therapist you should consider the client's balance, cognition, strength, endurance, body type, range of motion, ect. You should understand and consider what the client is able to do alone and what the client needs assistance in.  When facilitating a transfer, you must encourage the client to actively participate. You need to consider how much the client is able to help. By understanding how much the client can help, you are not only ensuring your safety, but also the client's safety. This ensures that you do not have to completely hold all of the client's weight.  When promoting a safe transfer, you need to consider the environment you are in. The environment should be clear of all tripping hazards. The the...
