Reflection on the Experiences of Wheelchair Marathoners

After reading two chapters about Paul Erway, who is a wheelchair marathoner, I have a better understanding of wheelchairs and also marathons that include people who have disabilities.  Miami, Florida: The first chapter I read was about the marathon that took place in Miami, Florida. I was truly inspired by this chapter. The organization that sponsors the race in Miami each year has a mission statement where they aim to allow people with all kinds of disabilities to be able to participate in athletics. Before reading this chapter, I was very under-educated about people with disabilities and their involvement in athletics. It never really came to my mind how important this may be for some of the people who have disabilities. They deserve the chance to be able to participate in whatever they want. I think it is truly inspiring that there are races specifically for people with disabilities. This allows them to have the same opportunities as people who do not have disabilities....

Posture and Body Mechanics: a Sheriff, a Girl, and a Student

Image
This is my boyfriend Colin. He has good posture because he is a deputy sheriff and they must present themselves well to the public.  This is my roommate Lily. She is sleeping with my dog in the car. She is representing poor posture and she woke up with neck and back pain.  This is my friend Sarah. She is looking at her computer reading an email. She has bad posture.  I am choosing to describe the picture of sarah looking at her computer reading an email. As you can see, she does not have very good posture while sitting at a desk.Since she is in a reclined position. Her neck is being strained drastically. She often complains of neck pain which makes sense considering the way she chooses to sit at the desk in class. She has a posterior pelvis tilt as she is reclining in her chair. Her spine is relatively straight but she does have thoracic kyphosis. She has drastic cervical flexion and her head is tilted downward. Her scapulae are protracted and her femurs are intern...

The Sensory System: Sight and Taste

Image
The sensory system is a part of the nervous system that processes sensory information in the brain. The sensory information that I will be focusing on in this discussion are sight and taste. In the article "The Science of Why No One Agrees on the Color of This Dress", Adam Rogers discusses the iconic dress that is either seen as blue and black or gold and white. There was a huge controversy across the United States about what color this dress was. Everyone was arguing and choosing sides rather than looking at why different people are seeing different colors.       The reason as to why people see different colors in the same dress is due to people's visual perception. Overtime people's visual perception has evolved and changed to see in daylight. Our visual system is able to evolve because we, as humans have neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is our brains way of adapting and changing. Our nervous system has the ability to change structure in respons...

"Man from the South": Hand function

Image
Assuming that the soldier lost his bet, he would have very limited grip strength and also struggle with holding onto items, especially heavy items. Since he is a sailor, some of his occupations on the boat would be impacted. The functionality of his hand would be greatly impacted in a negative way.  He would have trouble lifting heavy items on the boat along with trouble grasping ropes and tying knots. As a sailor, grasping onto a rope is an essential occupation when trying to anchor your boat, or pull up the anchor so that you can continue sailing. Since he also likes to drink beer as one of his occupations, he would also struggle when trying to open a beer bottle. Since he is on a boat, most of his food would be canned which would also be difficult for the sailor as he does not have optimum grip strength.       One adaptive technology device that would help grip onto heavy things or grip onto a rope to pull up the boats anchor would be a gr...
